Retail jobs rebound in Denver, slide in Colorado Springs over last 4 years

Denver is one of just 10 out of the 100 largest U.S. metro areas where retail jobs have increased over the last four years.

That's according to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics?

Thomas analyzed changes in retail job numbers for the 100 largest metro areas from February 2008 -- early in the Great Recession -- to February 2012.

In that time, Denver saw a 0.32 percent increase in retail employment, reaching a total of 125,700 jobs, Thomas reports.

That growth rate ranked eighth among the 100 metros. In terms of the total number of jobs up or down, Denver ranked ninth.

Eighty-nine other cities saw decreases in retail jobs over the four-year span, and one -- Oklahoma City -- was flat.

Colorado Springs lost 4.11 percent of its retail jobs between 2008 and 2012, finishing with 28,000, Thomas says.

The greatest retail employment increase nationwide -- both percentagewise and in whole numbers -- was in Houston (up 4.89 percent), followed by Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (up 4.49 percent) and Raleigh, N.C. (up 3.23 percent).

The greatest rate of decline was in Greenville, S.C. (down 12.67 percent), followed by Memphis, Tenn. (down 12.04 percent) and Akron, Ohio (down 11.72 percent).
