(AP) ? In fresh attacks on symbols of state power, twin suicide bombs exploded Monday near a government security compound in northern Syria and rockets struck the central bank in Damascus, killing nine people and wounding 100.

The regime and the opposition traded blame, accusing each other of dooming a United Nations plan to calm violence that has largely failed so far. The head of the U.N. observer mission acknowledged that his force cannot solve the country's crisis alone and urged both sides to stop fighting.

The attacks are the latest in a series of suicide bombings that started in December and have mostly targeted Syrian military and intelligence positions.

The regime routinely blames the opposition, which denies having a role or the capability to carry out such attacks. After other similar bombings, U.S. officials suggested al-Qaida militants may be joining the fray, and an al-Qaida-inspired Islamist group has claimed responsibility for previous attacks in Syria.

The powerful blasts, which blew two craters in the ground and ripped the facade off a multistory building, came a day after Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the observer mission, took up his post in Damascus.

"Ten, 30, 300 or 1,000 observers will not solve all problems," he told reporters Monday. "So everyone has to help us achieve this mission."

More than 9,000 people have been killed in the 13-month crisis, according to the U.N.

An April 12 cease-fire agreement has helped reduce violence, but fighting persists, and U.N. officials have singled out the Syrian regime as the main aggressor.

An advance team of 16 U.N. observers is on the ground to try to salvage the truce, which is part of a broader plan by special envoy Kofi Annan to launch talks between President Bashar Assad and his opponents. By mid-May, the team is to grow to 100, but U.N. officials have not said when a full 300-member contingent is to be deployed.

Monday's bombs went off in the northern city of Idlib, an opposition stronghold that government troops recaptured in a military offensive earlier this year. TV footage of the aftermath from the blasts showed torn flesh, burned-out cars, twisted debris and pavement stained with blood. The force of the explosions shattered windows and sent debris flying for hundreds of meters (yards).

"Is this their freedom?" one man yelled at the cameras at one of the blast sites.

A distraught woman shouted: "What have we done to those people? What have women, children and the elderly done to them?"

The state-run news agency SANA said security forces and civilians were among those killed. State TV said that many of the nearly 100 wounded were civilians.

The bombers detonated their explosives near a military compound and near Idlib's Carlton Hotel, SANA said.

A local activist, who only gave his first name, Ibrahim, for fear of repercussions, said the two sites bombed in Idlib are several hundred meters apart and that the explosions went off within five minutes of each other after daybreak Monday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. State media blamed "armed terrorists," a term it uses for rebels trying to topple the government. Activists claimed the regime was behind the bombings to discredit the opposition.

A statement by the Local Coordination Committees activist network called the series of suicide blasts "fabricated, staged explosions" and said "they can no longer fool anyone."

Two members of the U.N. observer team toured the site of the bombings, SANA said. Ibrahim said the observers have been staying at the Carlton, and a pro-government website reported that the hotel sustained some damage.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned "the terrorist bomb attacks" in Idlib and Damascus, U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said.

Analysts said it was doubtful the presence of U.N. observers would help improve the situation or halt such bombings.

"The U.N. is a political body, not an investigative body. The U.N. creates a political consensus among countries, but it's not a judge and jury about which side violated what agreement," said Jon Alterman, Middle East director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

An al-Qaida-inspired Islamist group called the Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant claimed responsibility Monday for a suicide bombing in downtown Damascus that killed at least 10 people on Friday. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of Al-Nusra's statement, which was posted on a militant website.

Top U.S. intelligence officials also have pointed to al-Qaida in Iraq as the likely culprit behind the previous bombings, raising the possibility that its fighters are infiltrating across the border to take advantage of the turmoil.

Al-Qaida's leader called for President Bashar Assad's ouster in February.

Earlier Monday, gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades at the central bank and at a police patrol in the capital of Damascus, wounding four officers, SANA said.

The bank's governor, Adib Mayaleh, said the only damage to the bank was shattered windows.

He also denied reports that Syria is trying to sell gold reserves to raise money as international sanctions take their toll. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said earlier this month that sanctions have reduced Syria's foreign currency reserves by half, from an estimated $17 billion at the start of the uprising.

The bank doesn't need to sell gold "as we have a big quantity of hard currency that can stand up to all those attacks," Mayaleh said.

As part of the cease-fire agreement, Syria's military was to have pulled tanks and troops off the streets, but it has instead continued to raid and attack opposition strongholds.

Near Damascus, amateur video posted Monday showed dozens of uniformed troops in helmets and body armor marching through a street in the suburb of Douma. A local activist, Mohammed Saeed, said the troops were carrying out arrests for a second day Monday.

In another suburb, Zamalka, activists said security forces tried to break a commercial strike by damaging shops that had been closed in solidarity with the protest.

In London, British Foreign Secretary William Hague warned that "there is a limit to the patience of the international community" with the regime's continued truce violations.

However, Western powers have limited options because Russia and China, Syria's allies, have shielded Assad from U.N. Security Council action.

Do wind farms actually cause climate change?

Instant Guide

posted on April 30, 2012, at 2:00 PM

Here's a curveball on climate change: New research published in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests that large wind farms might have a warming effect on the local climate. Many countries are rapidly expanding their capacity to generate electricity using wind-driven turbines as they try to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases created by the burning of fossil fuels. But are wind farms contributing to the very problem they're supposed to help solve? Here, a brief guide:?

How much do wind farms heat up the air?
Researchers at the State University of New York at Albany looked at satellite data from 2003 to 2011 across a wide swath of west Texas, where four of the world's largest wind farms were built during that period. Night-time temperatures in the air above the wind-power facilities were 1.3 degrees higher than in other areas. "We attribute this warming primarily to wind farms," say the authors of the study.

What accounts for the warming?
Normally, temperatures drop after the sun sets, as cooler air settles on the ground. But windmills create turbulence that stirs up that chilly air, mixing it with a warmer layer on top and preventing temperatures from falling as much as they otherwise would. These findings confirm previous research in 2010 that found windmills can make nights warmer and days cooler in the area immediately around them.

So the problem is local, not global?
Yes. But wind farms cover more and more vast stretches of land every day. The world's wind-power capacity jumped 21 percent last year, and is expected to grow from 238 gigawatts of electricity at any one time to 500 gigawatts by the end of 2016 as more wind farms are built.

Is this really so bad?
It's certainly not as bad as man-made warming that prompted the push to use wind, solar, and other forms of green energy in the first place. But it's also not without its costs. Consider west Texas, which went from 111 windmills in 2003 to 2,358 in 2011. Rising temperatures risk compounding problems such as a brutal drought the region has experienced over the last few years, which could have devastating effects on agriculture.

What's the solution?
Researchers see two ways to prevent the phenomenon from doing much damage. One is reducing the size of windmill blades so they don't stir up the air as much. But of course, smaller turbine blades would generate less power. Another option is locating new wind farms in areas with considerable air turbulence so the windmills wouldn't do anything to thermal layers that Mother Nature isn't already doing herself.

Understanding how to create the Limits in your Car Insurance Policy

Just how much will your insurance provider pay in case of any sort of accident?

If you?ve needed to purchase car insurance previously, you will know you will find numerous choices that should be designed to ensure you?re getting the perfect deal. Whether it?s selecting your deductible, add-on insurance packages, different rates and determining where you can apply discount rates, making certain you obtain the best deal in your vehicle insurance could be a challenge. Probably the most important choices you make when finalizing their insurance package is identifying how high their car insurance limits ought to be. In the following paragraphs we?ll have a look at car insurance limits, and then try to explain a technique for understanding how to create the limits in your car insurance policy.

Exactly what do you mean by ?Auto Insurance Limits??

Car insurance limits are basically the very best amounts that the insurance provider is needed to spend in case of an injuries, crash or damage to property that?s been triggered because of your vehicle. For example, for those who have a $50,000 personal injuries protection insurance plan, your limit is $50,000 in healthcare treatment and connected costs. Anything far above your car insurance limits will have to be taken care of through another insurance plan, or possibly your personal pocket.

For this reason selecting your car insurance limits is essential should you set your limits low you may have the ability to save a little of cash, but you may be in danger when you get within an costly accident. In case your limits are extremely high, you?re wasting cash that may be offer better use elsewhere inside your budget.

Predicting to buy a Accident doesn?t seem possible

The main reason you buy car insurance would be to safeguard you financially in case of an accident or accident. As these occasions are impossible to calculate, the expense associated with one are similarly very tough to try and determine. Your only accident within the next 5 years might be a little scrape or dent inside your fender, or else you may finish up involved with a higher-speed accident that triggers significant bodily injury to motorists and people and levels of damage to property.

If you choose to skimp in your car insurance limits and finish track of a pricey accident (or worse, a suit) to deal with, you may be in financial trouble. Hospital bills are just getting good costly as time continues, and who knows when the other party will probably be driving a clunker or perhaps a completely new luxury vehicle. The objective of your car insurance would be to mitigate the financial risks associated with driving, so choose your guidelines sensibly.

The Greater the Limits, the Best you?re

Undoubtedly, the greater your car insurance limits would be the best you?ll be should you finish up in one of these simple pricey crashes. Ideally, you?ll want to make sure that your car insurance provider eventually ends up having to pay because the all inclusive costs out of the box possible. Including car repairs, injuries, lost pay and anything else that arrives by having an accident.

If you?re able to afford it, invest in your car insurance limits to become up to your insurance provider enables you to go. Some states have laws and regulations regarding minimum car insurance limits, and doubling as well as tripling these may be beneficial.

Greater Limits often means Future Discount rates

Choosing greater car insurance limits at first often means receiving discount rates should you ever have to switch insurance companies later. Other car insurance companies will typically provide you with a little from your regular rates as you?ve already taken the initiative and compensated to possess your limits set greater.

Low Limits often means Wage Garnishing or Heavy Fines

The effects of choosing low car insurance limits can finish up being quite severe should you result in a high-cost accident. If you?re not able to cover the damages along with other expenses far above you car insurance limits, a court determining the situation may order that the future employment wages be garnished until your total debts are compensated off. This debt will in all probability collect interest as lengthy because it goes to pay for it entirely, meaning you are able to finish up having to pay way over the extra costs of car insurance could have been to begin with. It?s tempting to stint in your car insurance, but be ready for effects should you finish up inside a pricey accident.

Low insurance limits means more income from your pocket!

The bottom line is Always your financial allowance

Ultimately, the true secret to identifying how high you place your limits is when much room you?ve inside your budget to cover car insurance. If you want to scrape by using the minimum, you?ll most likely need to set your limits in a lower amount than for those who have extra money you are able to lead. Keep in mind that it?s better to set your limits up to you are able to reasonably afford to make sure that when you get inside a pricey accident, your insurance provider foots because the balance as you possibly can.

Try out the different combinations- you will be suprised to note that the car insurance premium does not rise as much as your limits- Check it out. Higher auto insurance limits would not bumb up your premium very much but will lower your car insurance.

Rice University chemical engineering students' plan would make Chinese gas 'green' and profitable

A team of Rice University students accepted a challenge to turn shale gas produced in China into a range of useful, profitable and environmentally friendly products and did so in a cost-effective manner.

The CHBE Pandas (CHBE stands for chemical and biomolecular engineering) designed a process by which shale gas extracted in the rich Sichuan Basin could be turned into methanol, hydrogen and carbon disulfide, all valuable products in the booming Chinese economy. The Rice team was one of seven groups of students presented similar challenges for locations outside of the United States as their capstone design projects, required of most graduates of Rice's George R. Brown School of Engineering.

For their efforts, the Pandas Apoorv Bhargava, Prachi Bhawalkar, Valicia Miller, Shelby Reinhardt, Kavita Venkateswar and Erte Xi were grand prize winners at the Engineering Design Showcase, part of Rice's UnConvention earlier this month.

"We literally got the last one in the hat," Bhargava said of the assignment handed out for their final semester at Rice. "All of the chemical engineering projects were the same, just in different locations, and how we approached the solution depended on the location."

The team had to deal not only with processing what's known as "sour gas" straight out of the wellhead, but also had to come up with a solid budget for the construction and profitable operation of the plant as well as a strategy to protect the environment.

"We think it's a viable project because of what we're transforming the natural gas into," Venkateswar said. The process they designed would take in the raw shale gas produced in the controversial extraction process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The primary product would be methanol, of which China is the largest user in the world. China blends methanol into gasoline and is developing cars that would run on pure methanol.

The second product, hydrogen, would be a feedstock for ammonia in fertilizer production, which has great value in the Sichuan Basin, the largest agricultural area in China. The third would be carbon disulfide, widely used in the Sichuan textile industry. The team said 99 percent of the recovered fracturing fluid would be purified into water and fed into methanol production. A small amount of crystallized sludge from fracturing chemicals would be sent to a landfill.

Team advisers Kenneth Cox and Richard Strait were inspired to issue the assignment by a Department of Energy-funded 2011 study on shale gas and U.S. national security by Rice's Baker Institute for Public Policy. The report details the rapid development over the last decade of technology to extract natural gas from shale, an increasingly rich resource in the United States, and the resulting shift in the world's energy economy.

"The world of shale gas presents a real interesting situation," said Strait, an adjunct professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Rice and former director of coal monetization and CO2 management at KBR. "We're in boom times if you want to produce gas at what are now historically low prices. You make no profit." He said energy producers are considering ways to turn raw shale gas into products that will better serve the market's needs.

"We tried to give the students problems for which there's no current solution," said Cox, a Rice professor in the practice of chemical and biomolecular engineering. "Major companies are looking at ways to upgrade shale gas, but no one's built a plant to do that yet."

Also, Cox said, "There are a lot of issues associated with the public perception of fracking, and part of the assignment was to help change that perception by offering something that was environmentally friendly, gave benefit to the community, helped clean up the water and was still able to pull a profit at the end of the day."

He said the Pandas' solution was "very imaginative" for their handling of the high concentration of highly toxic hydrogen sulfide found in Sichuan shale gas. "It's 8.38 percent of the incoming feed," said Venkateswar. "Usually natural gas feeds have it on the order of several hundred parts per million."

"The ability to make carbon disulfide provides us a solution to the high hydrogen sulfide content," Xi said.

Building the Pandas' plant with the team's innovative assembly of known technologies would cost the Chinese government $5 billion, Bhargava said. "Chemical engineering design in the real world, the way we understand it, works in three phases," he said. "You start off with a preliminary design analysis, as we did. Then we move into another stage where the chemical engineers meet up with the mechanical engineers and start designing it in more detail: 'What pipes do we need to go from here to there?'

"And then we meet with the architects for the final design stage: 'OK, what is this going to look like when we build it? Is it going to look terrible in someone's backyard?'"

Bhargava said the Pandas designed a process that would generally take as many as 15 engineers six or seven months to accomplish. The team spent long hours using simulation software at Rice's Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, where the students aligned components and tested for the desired chemical reactions. "But a computer can tell you only so much," Bhargava said. "A chemical engineer has to make the decisions. Our design is very, very close to what a real chemical engineer does in his or her job. We were working in a very realistic setting."

Jane Austen Guide Teaches Single Women to Guard Hearts ...

A new book is out this month to support single women:? The Jane Austen Guide to Happily Ever After. I endorsed Elizabeth Kantor?s latest book and I wish I had read it when I was younger; it would have saved me some broken hearts!

Kantor offers guidance for the modern single woman through Jane Austen?s works. It is clever and enjoyable. While we might think of Austen?s world as irrelevant to what we now face, Kantor demonstrates that Austen?s approach was, in fact, modern in many respects. Austen?s stories show women managing their own relationships, for instance. She used literary devices to get parents out of the way!

This book helps us weigh the impact of Romantic love in our lives, or in other words, that crazy kind of love that movies and novels rely on for generating high-octane and combustible love stories. It?s the type of love at first sight that can blind us from rational considerations. Kantor, through Austen?s examples, shows women how to pace relationships in a sophisticated and empowered way so that crazy love doesn?t de-rail their happiness.

A lot of Christian women have heard the phrase, ?Guard your heart.? Or even better, ?Find a guy who will guard your heart.? This book teaches women exactly how to guard their hearts. A lot of it is about pacing the speed that you emotionally attach to a guy.

The book introduces the concept of admiration vs. attachment. A guy may admire you greatly and appreciate your time together, but not be in love and ready to choose you above all other women, i.e. attach. This is a very important point worth studying because women can start to attach to a man when he is merely in admiration-mode. This is risky and can lead to major disappointment.

How do we know what pace to go by? Through the man?s words and behavior. It?s a dance. We should strive not to shift into attachment when he has not given us any reason to think he?s on that path. And let?s face it ? guys can be annoying and inconsistent. Therefore, it can take a lot of analysis to determine what his intentions are early in a relationship. He may not even know what he wants yet, which is why it?s important to stay in the present moment and watch him closely. It?s worth the effort and can save us from humiliation.

What is fabulous about this book is that it doesn?t propose that women become false or numb to emotion. Our sensitivity is one of our greatest strengths, and relationships are important enough to manage well.

In fact, this book encourages us to become relationship experts again. While the context is mainly focused on finding a mate, Kantor points out that in the past, people were forced to develop stronger relationship skills early on. Nowadays, we might begin dating and find ourselves starting largely from scratch when it comes to relationships skills.

While our newfound independence has many perks, we could also benefit from flexing our relationship muscles more often in our lives. What?s neat about this is that we don?t have to wait for a guy to come along to get relational. We can practice being a good friend every day.

Final Reflections ? My Expectations Were Surpassed ? BUSINESS ...

?I am looking to participate in this wonderfully innovative class in an effort to both enhance my academic and professional growth as well as develop a personal connection with the state of Israel.?

?

?

The above quote was taken from my application essay for this class, addressing what I hoped to gain from my experience. I believe the best way to reflect on and evaluate an experience is to address the initial expectations set for the experience. In this sense, my time in Business, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in Israel has surpassed any and all of my expectations. The ability to spend the first half of the semester studying and learning about business and history in Israel coupled with the opportunity to travel to Israel and see what we had learned firsthand made for a truly unique experience. This class is like no other and I am just so lucky that I had the chance to experience this wonderfully innovative opportunity.

Outside of an academic context, the trip to Israel also provided a connection that I had long been seeking. I finally had the chance to connect with my heritage and religion. I have always sought comfort in knowing that there exists a place that wholly encompasses what it means to be Jewish, and I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to experience this place firsthand. Israel truly is a magical, innovative, and unique country and I look forward to returning in the near future.

As this year wraps up, I am finally realizing how much of an impact this trip has made on me both personally and academically. This class has expanded the depth of my knowledge and for that I am truly thankful. Although this class is coming to an end, I know that this is just the beginning of my relationship with this wonderful country.

Generally speaking, pests are pests - Is Rodent Control Even ...

Generally speaking, pests are pests, but some pests, such as mice and rats, are often far more destructive and unhealthy to humans than, say, ants or roaches. When homes or businesses have a rodent control problem, it is time to call in a professional rodent exterminator. This is especially important for those who live in Southern California where rodent control issues can turn into a nightmares if left unchecked.

Southern California, including Los Angeles and Orange County, are not the only areas in the US that can suffer from rodent control problems. Any area that has mild, mostly dry weather for extended periods of time can see an increase in rodent numbers in any given year. Rats and mice are happy to remain active year round as long as they have food and shelter. And while they are active, they are also breeding. This is how a single property, be it a residence or a commercial building, can become overrun with rodents in a very short period of time.

Many property owners feel that they can be their own rodent exterminator. This is often true if the rodent problem is small and limited to a small area. However, many property owners simply will not know the true extent of the infestation. Rats and mice love to build their nests inside walls, attics, and cellars, making it difficult for the average property owner to know for sure just how many pests are in the structure. Just because the property owner sees only one mouse or rat does not mean that there are not a dozen more hiding somewhere within the building.

It should be noted that effective rodent control is the only way to protect the property and its contents from damage. Mice and rats are known to be some of the most dangerous pests that live within structures. They can gnaw into electrical wiring, causing fires which can destroy a property in time at all. Some studies have estimated that as many as 50,000 fires per year are started because rodents gnawed into electrical wiring. Add to this the possible injury to people who might be in the building at the time of fire and you can see why hiring a rodent exterminator is so important in terms of property security and human safety.

It is also known that effective rodent control measures can eliminate food contamination caused by rats and mice. These animals feed on whatever they can gain entry to and that includes many of the food stuffs that are found in the average home or business lunch room. They are well equipped to gnaw into packages, boxes and cartons and will eagerly devour whatever they find there. In return, they leave their droppings and urine which no one wants to be exposed to much less consume by accident. When proper rodent control measures are taken, these issues become a thing of the past.

If you would like to learn more on how to select a professional rodent exterminator or wish to learn more about rodent control in general, visit the site. In-depth information is available and access to the site is free.

Visit this site to learn more about rodent control for Los Angeles and Orange County residents. Service provided by highly skilled rodent exterminator company with years of experience.

Steve Wozniak Chooses Windows Phone Over Android, Still Loves His iPhone

Nokia Lumnia 900 - Windows Phone OSApple co-founder Steve Wozniak might have helped get Apple off the ground but during a podcast this week he had big compliments for Apple competitor Microsoft. Wozniak several weeks ago picked up the Lumia 900 smartphone which is powered by the Windows Phone OS and during his podcast over the weekend he said Windows Phone?s OS was hands down beating out Google Android.

Wozniak in no uncertain terms said Windows Phone has the ?most beautiful? visual experience he has witnessed on a mobile platform, noting that the platform made him feel like he was interacting with a ?friend, not a tool.?

Steve also said he liked that the Lumia 900 was ?fast and reliable? but noted that the built-in camera had plenty to fix before it was worthy of being used for any type of picture taking.

While Wozniak added that Microsoft has appeared to ?pick up the spirit of Apple? ?he didn?t accuse Microsoft of going after Apple design features but did wonder outloud if Microsoft had maybe picked up a former Apple employee to help influence the Windows Phone interface.

The former Apple employee then added:

?I also surmised that Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated at Microsoft, due to a lot of what I see and feel with this phone making me think of a lot of great Apple things.?

The Metro interface in the meantime has been mostly attributed to Joe Belifiore, a software designer who has been working at Microsoft for more than 20 years.

In the meantime while Steve Wozniak has received unreleased Google Android phones for testing (Galaxy Nexus) he has remained loyal to Apple, always carrying one, sometimes two iPhones on his person.

Here?s the full Steve Wozniak podcast regarding the Windows Phone OS.

Important Guidelines For House Relocation | HomeChoice Real Estate

Relocating house is certainly no easy task by any means, however that isn't to say that it must be difficult or problematic for you. If you do things step by step you can execute the process of moving in a calm and relaxed way. The suggestions below can be extremely useful if you're moving any time soon, so make sure you keep them in mind.

You can make your move easier by reducing the amount of things you have. This is a fairly simple observation, but it can make a big difference if you make up your mind to do this. Relocating can be the ideal time to get rid of clutter and throw out, give away or sell possessions that you don't really need or use. There are scads of maneuvers for doing this, from having a garage sale to listing items for sale on craigslist to having a cleaning day where you throw needless things in garbage bags. Consider examining the items in your home that are taking up space, such as old papers, books, magazines and movies and music. By not taking all this stuff with you on your move, you can lighten your load considerably. You should keep an eye on any valuables that could be lost easily. This includes items such as jewelry, important papers, family heirlooms and anything you consider valuable. People often lose track of things when they move, and this happens when you carelessly throw items into a box at the last minute. It's important to keep track of every small and valuable item when you're moving. You should put any important papers into a specially marked box or some folders and then keep them with you instead of shipping them off in a truck. It would be terrible if you arrived at your new home without any idea of where your valuables are. To keep track of where your valuables are write down where you put them so you don't forget.

Finding out some info about the new place you're going to be living at is a good idea. Your best bet of doing any research is to search online for relocation information. You may already know some people who live in the area, if so ask them about any important places, daily life, the people, etc. You should find out if the place you're moving to has low crime rates, is an useful distance to the shopping area and a few other things before buying a house there. Regions and cities can have very big differences between them, which is why you should do some research before you move.

Home relocation, as we've seen in this article, involves a variety of elements, and losing sight of any one of them can cause difficulties. If you are organized and sort everything out in a methodical way your relocation will go much better than if everything was unorganized. Don't make relocating more stressful than it has to be; give yourself lots of time to get everything done and keep what's written above in mind.
